The Room Tax
The loudest AI user in your room is teaching everyone the wrong lesson.
Last week was the silent tax. This one is louder.
Last week we named the first tax. Somebody sends you general Copilot output and walks away. You verify it in silence. The cost is yours alone.
There is a second tax in the same room, and it does not stay with one person. This one is louder. And this one is more expensive, because everyone watching is absorbing it without knowing they are paying.
The scene.
Somebody in your room is getting attention for using AI. They are not hiding it. They are demoing prompts in meetings. They are dropping screenshots in chat. They are confident. The room is impressed.
Watch what they are actually doing.
Their prompts are fragmented. "Summarize this." "Make it shorter." "Make it more professional." They are reaching for easy. They are taking the part of the work they did not want to do and handing it to a model they do not understand.
From across the room, that looks like using AI. It is not. It is leaning on AI. The difference is invisible to everyone watching, including the person doing it.
The pattern.
Here is what is happening to them.
They got a quick win. The first prompt worked, the output was better than what they would have produced cold, and they settled at the first place that felt like progress.
It is not progress. They cannot do the work without the prompt now. The day the prompt stops working, they will not figure out why. They will look for the next prompt.
That is the tax on them. The bigger tax is on everyone watching.
Everyone watching is learning. Not the prompts. The posture. They are seeing what AI use looks like, and what they are seeing is somebody leaning on a model to skip the work. Every demo, every screenshot, every meeting reinforces it. The lesson the room is absorbing is that this is the relationship. You ask. It answers. You ship.
That is the dependency being taught. The flare-thrower is not doing it on purpose. They do not know they are teaching anything.
Why the room gets this wrong.
Three things are happening at once. None of them are bad-faith.
First, the room sees confidence. The flare-thrower is not faking anything. They think it worked. Confidence is easy to read from across a meeting. It is the worst signal for whether somebody is climbing.
Second, the bar is from a year ago. A year ago, any AI use looked impressive. The bar was set when nobody was using anything. It has not been updated.
Third, the room is comfortable. The flare-thrower's pattern is achievable. If their pattern is climbing, then everyone is already climbing. Nobody has to change anything. The ceiling is low enough for everyone to live under.
The room is not getting this wrong by accident. It is getting it wrong because getting it wrong is comfortable.
Their bravery still counts.
Read carefully. The flare-thrower is doing something nobody else is. They are breaking the silence. They are putting AI in the conversation. They are doing it from a peer's voice, not a force-feeder's. In a quiet room, that is almost everything.
Their bravery is making space. The room that watches them is a room where AI is allowed in the conversation now. The next person who tries something will find an easier path because the flare-thrower paid the cost of being first.
And the lesson they are teaching while they break the silence is the wrong lesson. The room is being shown what dependency looks like and being told it is climbing. The courage is real. The damage is real. Both of them are sitting in the same chair.

If you are a leader: the loudest AI user in your room is probably setting the ceiling for everyone else. Your dashboard sees usage, not posture. It cannot tell the difference between somebody climbing and somebody leaning, and it will give you the same green number for both. The pattern you celebrate is the bar the room holds.
